Things just keep looking better for Linux on the desktop

I just read some more benchmarks showing poor performance of Mac OS X, whether on Intel or PowerPC.  But it doesn't matter, because it works so well, right? :-)

In the benchmarks above, Windows XP scored much better than Mac OS X in performance, but as one of my colleagues remarked to me today, "I unwind by reinstalling Windows."

Is God banned from history?

In a recent book review of Craig Blomberg's Contagious Holiness: Jesus' Meals with Sinners in Review of Biblical Literature, James G. Crossley1 concludes:
But when the result is a historical Jesus who is greater than anyone else and who can do spectacular supernatural things, one must wonder just how the words "historical" and "authentic" are being used.

One wonders where even to begin when trying to understand such a statement and the motivations for it.

Linux is for losers?

(I know this is old news, but...)

It seems that Theo de Raadt doesn't like Linux.  While Theo and his friends have been writing an extremely secure version of BSD, Linux has taken over the world, and not too many people want his software any more.  Not surprisingly, he's a little offended.

What free software is all about

Forbes says that Theo is "a pioneer of the open source software movement and a huge proponent of free software." But it seems that both Forbes and Theo don't understand the concept of free software.

Reflections on music formats and copyright

The Occasion

It was my birthday recently, and my wife bought me a CD/MP3 player for the car.  Having better-sounding and easier-to-operate media in the car wouldn't ordinarily be a problem, but there were two big issues for me:

  1. My music collection was predominantly in Ogg Vorbis format, and my car player doesn't support that.
  2. Under current Australian law, it is technically illegal for me to either copy my CDs or convert my CDs to another digital format such as Ogg or MP3 for use in my car player.

The former problem could easily be solved, but not by me.  There are no low-end card audio devices commercially available in Australia that support Ogg.  In fact, when i went looking at devices, i didn't see a single one in any store that supported Ogg, and i got strange looks from several technology-ignorant salespersons when i mentioned Ogg.

Living Microsoft-free

Many people are surprised when, as an IT professional, they ask me for advice with Windows computers and my answer is "I don't know".  The fact is that i don't use it that much, because for nearly 6 years now, i've been using exclusively Linux on my home and work desktops.  I don't use Microsoft products because Linux completely suits my needs, and when i use my computer i want to do so in freedom.

The products i use to make this possible are:
