Amarok proxy settings issue

I discovered a workaround for the bug in Amarok that was preventing me from adopting it as my primary music player.  Full details are in the bug, executive summary follows:

  • I disallow outgoing connections from all PCs on my home LAN as a security measure to guard against spyware and spam bots.
  • Amarok uses two different proxy settings - one for streaming data and one for submitting last.fm track info.  The former is configured in Amarok and the latter in the KDE control panel (kcontrol).
  • When no proxy is defined for track sumission, my firewall denies the outbound connection from Amarok, and it hangs (this is the real bug)....

Error installing OpenOffice.org update on Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty) 64-bit

I just ran into Bug #122976 when installing a new system on Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn).  It occurred when trying to install an OpenOffice.org upgrade, but appears to really be related to ttf-opensymbol.  There's a simple workaround which i noted in the bug log.

Firefox 2.0 tab behaviour tweak

One of the things i disliked about the Firefox 2.0 upgrade was the way it handled tabs.  For someone like me who routinely has 8-30 tabs per window, and 4-6 windows open at once, the Firefox 1.x method of having a single close button for all tabs in a fixed location means that closing multiple tabs in quick succession is much more efficient.  (More discussion can be found in this thread at the Mozilla forums site.) It turns out the behaviour is not gone completely, just not enabled by default and not visible in the preferences dialog.  To restore the Firefox 1.x method:...

Debian etch install on Intel DG965WH motherboard

After more than a week of testing combinations, i've managed to install Debian etch (amd64 version) on my new Core 2 Duo system.  It required using the latest daily build and putting my IDE CD-ROM into my USB IDE enclosure - it appears that the the problem is that Debian kernels haven't got a pata_marvell module yet.  Interestingly, OpenSUSE 10.2 installs perfectly.  More details can be found at Debian bug report #397062.

How to write verifiable emails

The Email problem

Email has become the most common means for IT companies to communicate with their clients.  Unfortunately, some companies do it better than others.  The most basic mistake that most companies make in sending their emails is not making them verifiable. Email doesn't in itself provide any mechanism for ensuring the genuineness of its content.  Various types of malicious code (e.g. spyware, viruses/worms, phishing scams) use this lack of inherent genuineness to trick users into behaviour that can harm them and their computers....
