Living Microsoft-free

Many people are surprised when, as an IT professional, they ask me for advice with Windows computers and my answer is "I don't know".  The fact is that i don't use it that much, because for nearly 6 years now, i've been using exclusively Linux on my home and work desktops.  I don't use Microsoft products because Linux completely suits my needs, and when i use my computer i want to do so in freedom.

I recently did a quick stocktake of my day-to-day applications, and i realised i missed a number of applications that i almost always have open:

  • J-Pilot: a Palm desktop sync
  • XMMS: MP3 player
  • RealPlayer: RealAudio player (also plays MP3s, but it doesn't have the playlist features XMMS)

  • Totem (plus libdvdcss for DVD access) for playing DVDs
